Torres Vedras
Nestling on the south-western edge of Serra de Montejunto, Torres Vedras was a royal residence from the mid-13th to the early 16th century.
Previously inhabited by Celts, Visigoths, Romans and the Moors, the town is best known for its light, refreshing wines and the Lines of Torres Vedras, a network of fortified defences built by the Duke of Wellington in 1809 to repel Napoleon's troops during the Peninsula War. When complete, over 600 guns and 152 masonry forts lay along two lines stretching from the sea to the River Tagus. The French troops eventually retreated to Spain in 1811.
What to see. Traces of trenches and bastions are still visible near the restored fort of São Vicente in the north of the town. In the centrally-located Largo de São Pedro, winged dragons enliven the Manueline portal of the church of São Pedro, which was rebuilt in the 16th century. The interior features interesting 18th-century azulejo glazed tiles and the tomb of João Lopes Perestelo, who accompanied Vasco da Gama on his epic pioneering voyage to India in 1497. The monastery church of the Convento de Graça contains an impressive 17th-century gilded altarpiece, while the main building houses a museum displaying Peninsular War memorabilia.
Nearby. At Varatojo, 4 km west of Torres Vedras, the old convent of Santo António is worth seeing for its Gothic cloister and sacristy lined with 17th-century azulejo glazed tiles. 3 km east lies the prehistoric fortifications of Castro do Zambujal. The spa waters of Vimeiro, a few kilometres north-west of Torres Vedras, are recommended for kidney diseases, digestive problems and some skin ailments.
Santa Cruz Beach
Perhaps because of the rare natural beauty of its beaches, Santa Cruz is one of the most sought after seaside resorts of the western region of Portugal.

Santa Cruz and its outskirts are favoured with a group of beaches with extensive miles of golden sands, surrounded by majestic cliffs. These slopes formed by clay rocks in red and grey tones, either covered by the green vegetation or discovered, that involves the swimmers in a natural frame of beauty. Attracted by these charms are the thousands of tourists spread throughout enjoying the moments of rest and relaxation.

The wind and sea can sometimes aggressively whip away the sands, but they are so extensive and many of them protected by the cliffs. Paradise for surfers with all the natural conditions to practice this sport.

During the summer season, especially the month of August, Santa Cruz reaches a resident population of 40.000. On quiet weekends, be it summer or winter, mainly on Sunday afternoons, hundreds of people that live on the outskirts do not dispense their Sunday stroll in Santa Cruz.

Even though many opt for a refreshing swim in the Atlantic or simply relaxing the body by sunbathing. Along more than 20km of coast, from Assenta to Porto Novo, there are more than twenty beaches at your entire disposal some in proximity of inviting picnic grounds or rest areas. Of all of them stand out: Praia da Assenta Sul, Praia da Assenta Norte, Praia de Cambelas, Praia da Foz do Sizandro, Praia Azul, Praia Formosa, Praia do Guincho, Praia da Azenha, Praia de Santa Helena, Praia do Centro, Praia do Norte, Praia da Física, Praia do Pisão, Praia do Mirante, Praia do Navio, Praia da Vigia, Praia da Mexilhoeira, Praia do Seixo, Praia de Santa Rita Sul, Praia de Santa Rita Norte and Praia de Porto Novo.

There are various reasons to enjoy a stroll through Santa Cruz: Not just the natural beauty of its landscape but also the power of unwinding relaxation you will find.

Review submitted by non-Villarenters customer: From the moment the sun comes up and the rooster crows, the dogs start barking and not just the dogs right next door. Somewhere close by there are a whole compound that bark all day and into the night. Once one group stops, the other starts. We had an exhausting week there with hardly any sleep. We tried to keep the doors closed whenever possible to get rid of some of the dog noise but the house became too hot. The area itself is nice, and close to the freeway, which is great for day trips, which you ll want to do to get out of the house during the day. Make sure you take your own sheets as there are definitely not enough for 7 people, we were struggling with 4 of us.
