Casa do Retiro is situated near the Santa Teresa Monument , which was erected by ancestors of the current owners, in the village of Canhas. The large villa has open green spaces with Laurissilva trees from the indigenous forest and diverse stone objects which were used by previous inhabitants. Some of the utensils at your disposal are mills, a grape press, a spring and a large barbeque.
 
Recently renovated and offering a luxury standard over 350 m² of living area, the house interior is decorated with century old English, Indo-Portuguese and Madeirien furniture, which is distributed throughout the five bedrooms, two of which have en-suite bathrooms; living-room and dining room. The house is fitted to accommodate children, who, under the age of 6 stay free of charge.

It is well worth taking the time to extend your visit a little further to the north east so that you can discover the island of Porto Santo, roughly 40 km away. Although this is much flatter than its «mother-island», there is a wonderfully extensive beach waiting for you here, with sands that are famous for their great therapeutic properties. At Vila Baleira, the island's picturesque capital, you must make sure to visit the house where Christopher Columbus once lived.

To prepare food you will find a cooker, an oven, a microwave, a fridge, a freezer, a kettle, a toaster. You will also find a dish washer, a washing machine, an iron and ironing board. The owner has also provided crockery, glassware, cooking utensils.

Richard says: "Property fantastic in a smallish village but close enough to all the places you want to go. The village has a bank/cash machines, supermarket and a pizza restaurant (does more than just pizza) staff were excellent and prices very good. The maid was fantastic, although she only spoke a little english we were well looked after and provided with home grown tomatoes and home made bread! Only negative comment we did ask for extra sun loungers when booking which we were told would be provided but never got. "
