Information on Side
Side is one of the oldest holiday resorts in the world - what else can you say about the place where legend says that Cleopatra bathed in the sea with Mark Anthony! The old town of Side is a joy with the ancient roman ruins mixed in between bars, restaurants and shops. The main area of the town is pedestrianised and it's a wonderful place to visit in the early evening to window shop, buy some bargains, have a drink or grab a bite to eat. It has a great atmosphere but it can get busy in the height of the season.

The ruins of the ancient city mingle with the new, and despite its development as a resort, it retains its own very special atmosphere and charm. Its impressive second century theatre, supported by arched vaults, offers fine views towards the sea and you can still see the remains of an ancient street lined with pillars and arcades and the market place where slaves were once sold. Nearby the Agora Baths Museum contains a beautifully restored fifth century bath house and some interesting statues and artifacts.

Side is a well established holiday resort and has a wide selection of shopping opportunities, bars and restaurants to suit the very cosmopolitan collection of holidaymakers who visit the area. The bustling, colorful streets leading down to the sea offer bargains galore. There are shops selling Turkish Delight, designer jeans (both fake and real but all at lower prices than at home), handcrafted embroidery, lace table cloths and serviettes, carpets, leather goods and a wonderful selection of gold and silver jewelery. The Saturday market is also worth a visit for clothes, lace, fresh fruit and vegetables.

The beach is, of course, one of Side' main attractions, and it is hard to rival the quality of the sand or the length of the beach, with plenty of space to sunbathe even in high season.

The beaches are situated to the east and west of the old town - to the west is the main hotel area so the beaches are busier with more activities. To the east the beach is undeveloped and much quieter - wander amongst the sand dunes and be surprised by ancient ruins.

Lovers of history will love the opportunity to just wander around in Side, but to understand the history of the place a guided tour helps to get a sense of perspective. They should also take the opportunity to visit Perge another wonderful ancient site, where St Paul preached his first sermon, or Termessos an old fortress city high in the hills. As an alternative to history take a day trip on the Manavgat River, visit the pretty village of Manavgat and the famous waterfalls. With such a fantastic beach area there is a wide selection of water sports available to suit all age groups.

There is no shortage of places to go after sundown and many bars stay open until late. Set in a little side street, Café Dreams serves cocktails, wines and spirits in comfortable, relaxing surroundings with live music most nights. The atmosphere and good music of Stones near the temple of Apollo makes it popular with the British, while the Temple next door is frequented by Turkish and British alike. The resort's two night clubs are Lighthouse, by the harbor, and Oxyd on the edge of town - a large open air venue with a laser show and swimming pool.
An excursion to Kursunlu waterfalls makes a refreshing change from the heat of the beach, and the Manavgat waterfalls and river are close by and well worth a visit.

All in all, Side is a great all-year-round resort with something to suit all tastes, which is why it is popular with couples and families of all ages.

Information on Turkey
Turkey is a land of myth, a cradle of various civilizations, a canvas of nature’s most aesthetic bounties and a confluence of varied streams of culture. Owing to its favorable position, Turkey happens to be the bridging nation between two most important continents of the east and west (Europe and Asia) and the point where the three continents of the old world (Europe, Asia and Africa) meet.

This country therefore boasts of a spicy blend of oriental and modern, East and West, splendor and sleekness, which makes diversity its other name. This is a place where every visitor can find something for himself. The world-class cuisine, vibrant market places, warm hospitality of the Turkish people, recreational facilities, architectural splendor of the mosques and castles and an unparallel natural beauty make Turkey an invincible tourist attraction and answer the question of your wonder-lusting heart – “why go to Turkey?”

Turkey's Mediterranean shore, called the Turquoise Coast, is nearly 1600 km (994 miles) long, scattered with fine-sand beaches and sprinkled abundantly with classical cities turned to picturesque ruins.

The Turquoise Coast is the first place to think of when you're considering a seaside vacation in Turkey. It has more and better beaches and resorts than does the Aegean coast, and warmer, saltier water than the Black Sea coast.

The Taurus Mountains form a dramatic backdrop along much of the coast, often dropping steeply right into the sea, but in some places rivers have washed down enough sediment over the ages to form beaches backed by fertile alluvial plains good for growing cotton, vegetables, and even tropical fruits like bananas.

So if you are planning to take an unwinding vacation, come to Turkey. This Mediterranean country has an ancient charm nestled in a magnificent natural surrounding, which combines with the extremely gracious and warm welcome from the locals. You will really gather an experience to treasure for your lifetime.

Sara says: "We recently returned from spending a lovely week in the beautiful resort of Side and can thoroughly recommend a holiday in this resort and particularly the apartment. The apartment is located in a beautiful part of the town on top of the only hill towering above the old town and designed to a very high standard. We noticed that the facilities could also accommodate wheelchair users as the owners appear to have had advice on wet room and wall bars etc. Our stay was made more enjoyable by the friendliness of the people in other apartments together with the fact that the locals went out of their way to help you – free taxis were supplied to local restaurants etc. (but beware of old town shops where they are quite vocal on trying to entice you into their shops!). The apartment could not be faulted and is luxurious as described – we had party of six but 8 would be ok using sofa bed . Facilities included satellite TV, cooking facilities, massive balcony, fridge freezer etc. so some days we didn’t even have to venture from the apartment. Another bonus was the fact that the master bedroom has direct access to the pool – only one of two on the complex.. Imagine the scene… by the pool and feeling too hot so stroll into apartment and access cool beers and stroll out again – how good is that!! Beaches are gorgeous, Roman history every where you turn but most important, food and drink were very reasonable (cocktails were very cheap if I remember). We even managed to get a pizza delivered to the apartment.. talk about home comforts.. All in all, I can thoroughly recommend Turkey, Side and Apollo Hills for a great holiday and promise I will return there sometime soon… "
