The Ile St-Louis was originally two smaller islands that were united in the 17th century. After the construction, lords and financiers built their homes here. As a result, the Ile St-Louis remains a lovely place to walk around and admire the mansions, still standing: less than a kilometer long and only about 300 meters wide.
The fact that it's tethered to the rest of the city by six bridges makes it seem like its own minuscule kingdom, imparting the impression of being almost self-contained.
