Costa Azahar
Know as the ‘Orange Blossom Coast with its superb climate, bounded by Catalonia in the north and Valencia to the South. An area of great contrast and beauty, with stunning sea views, mountain ranges, traditional fishing villages, the Ebro Delta and natural parks. The popular tourist resorts of Peniscola, Vinaros and Alcossebre offer many fiestas, markets, bars and restaurants.
All along the coast there is a wide range of beaches from long sandy stretches, to quiet coves backed by natural parks and orange groves. Throughout the area there is much history and the inland mountain areas offering a wealth of variety from, walking, cycling, bird watching, to fishing along the Ebro. The area is easily accessible from Valencia, Reus or Barcelona airports, with a new airport at Castillon by the end of 2006.
Sporting Activities
• Walking – Coastal walks between Peniscola and Alcossebre through the natural park of Sierra d’Irta. The North Coast path at Vinaros follows the many natural coves, with numerous restaurants to tempt you along your way. Many marked walks to hermitages and longer trails in the mountains including ‘GR’ routes.
• Cycling – Most of the paths along to coast are cycleable with mountain bikes which are available for hire locally and also in the mountains. For the more serious cyclist, there are many quiet roads which are used for training by many from different countries and local clubs in the area. Excellent for Triathlon training.
• Running – varied paths and farmers tracks in the area to suit all standards. Running club and track at Benecarlo who hold many events and welcome visitors.
• Gymnasium – If you still want to keep in training there are a number of gymnasiums, including physiotherapist, should you be unfortunate enough to sustain an injury.
• Motorcycling/quads – If you fancy an adventure through France or across Spain, the Costa Azahar is just the place to stop and unwind for a while by the sea or take to the road again into the mountain, where you see the wonderful scenery, feel the exhilaration of taking the long sweeping bends on deserted roads, re-fueling at local bars with paella at lunchtime. Quad bikes are also available for hire locally.
• Fishing – Fishing trips at sea or along the River Ebro. Fish you’ve always dreamt about catching! See photo gallery. Guided fishing trips arranged.
• Tennis – Fancy getting that bit of practice in before or at the end of the season? There are many courts available in the area, but arrangements can be made for groups to visit the local clubs for tournaments etc.
• Golf – The well established highly recommended 18 hole Golf Panaramica course is approx 15 minutes from Vinaros. Either stay at the Golf Course itself or arrangements can be made for you to play during your stay in the area. There are 7 new golf courses planned for the area in the next few years. Keep watching latest news
.
• Sailing – Marinas at Vineros and Benecarlo. New marina planned for Peniscola.

Wayne says: "GETTING THERE
Much depends on where you fly to. We flew to Barcelona (huge airport) which is about 200km away. Arriving late, we used the E-32 > E15 toll road and came out about 20 Euros worse off. The E32 is worth using initially but aim for the N340.
APARTMENT
The apartment is situated on a new development set into the hillside with limited sea views to left and ahead and views of the Sierra DIrta mountains to the right. Essentially it is two rows of 3 level apartments and a peripheral row of villas. There is a one-way circulation road around the outside and a pedestrianised street between the rows of apartments.
This apartment is on the third floor overlooking the pedestrianised route. It comprises a rear double bedroom, bathroom with bath, great shower, toilet, bidet and sink, small kitchen and small lounge. The balcony is quite spacious and has a table and 4 chairs which was great for breakfast although the sun only hit it later in the day.
The apartment has air-con although I confess I never really fathomed it and the rear bedroom was colder than the rest of the flat.
The rear double bed was OK but not that comfortable. Fine for a week though. Having two children, we had to press the sofa-bed in the front room into service. We left it up which takes up a lot of room. However, it was pretty uncomfortable and not really recommended. We ended up using the folding Z-bed and lying on the sofa itself. But then again, this is a one bedroom apartment so we cant really complain!
POOL/FACILITIES
The restaurant/bar and communal pool area are about 50 metres to the right looking from the balcony although you cant see the pool itself. There is another communal pool at the far end of the complex (deep with semi-circular toddlers pool inset) which has a small drinks bar. There is underground parking which was very useful although youll need to haul your cases up 7 short flights from the car park as there is no lift.
The communal pool is excellent with a large and deep pool and an adjacent toddlers pool which gets as hot as a bath on sunny days! The whole area is walled or fenced although there is no lifeguard or supervision so diving and ball games were permitted. That said, the pool, even in the height of August, was never very busy and we often had the pools to ourselves. Toilets are clean and situated nearby.
LESS GOOD POINTS (?):
1. Sunloungers were very scarce or broken and disappeared towards the end of the week. Towels on the floor were fine though. Plenty of parasols.
2. Very few English people while we were there. Mainly Spanish and lots of French people. So good or bad depending on your view.
3. On the Friday night ONLY, there was live entertainment by the pool area. It was loud and went on to 1am which I didnt find amusing especially as the singer was sub-karaoke standard. Overall, however, its a quiet area although you do occasionally have some idiots on quads and bikes wailing round.
4. The balconies are a little odd in that at the front part, you can see straight through into next doors balcony. The balustrade is also a possible hazard for little kids who could theoretically squeeze through (never happened, just a mental note!)
LOCAL AREA
Peniscola is a beautiful resort although theres not much in the way of large resorts here. The promontory has a large mediaeval castle on the top and is surrounded by houses and cobbled streets. It is a must-see but I recommend it around mid-morning as its very busy at night. Its all uphill though!
There is a small and shallow beach area on the Sierra DIrta side of Peniscola but the sand is not the best and the long beach on the other side along the main seafront is much nicer and the sea is lovely and quite safe although it can get busy. Of an evening, they have fantastic sand sculptures and the area remains a bustling and lively resort.
Parking is often at a premium, especially at night, and you do have to pay for it but its very reasonable at less than a Euro an hour anywhere from the foot of the castle right along the seafront. The one-way systems are a bit of a pain but you soon get used to them. The little fun fair is a complete rip-off at 2.50 or 3 Euros a ride .( 6 rides for 10 Euros but who wants to go on the same ride 10 times). Cant condone the shetland pony ride either.
The coast road to the right leads into the Sierra DIrta national park which is just unspoilt typical Spanish scrubby mountains. You can drive up into the mountain along the dirt trail (as we did) but it goes nowhere and your car will be caked in dirt when youre done.
OUTSIDE PENISCOLA
Vinaros is a very quiet place but the beach sand isnt very good. Peniscola is really the only choice. I recommend you take a drive up to Ares and Morella. Go down the N340, come off at Alcala de Xivert and follow the signs to Albocasser and Ares. Morella is a stunning mountain-top mediaeval walled town with beautiful buildings. We never got to the fort right at the top but the views were stunning anyway. Just follow the N232 back."
