Legend has it that the name means Ericeira, source, "land of sea urchins, because of the many sea urchins that abounded on its beaches. However, most recent research suggests the hedgehogs and not the sea as inspiration for the name. With the discovery of a copy of the old coat of arms of the Town, now in Archive-Museum of Mercy, it was confirmed that the animal is drawn there, in fact, a hedgehogs.
The storys cottage dating back, well, about 1000 BC. Its first charter dates from 1229, issued by the then Grand Master of the Order of Aviz, Dom Frei Fernão Rodrigues Monteiro, who thus established the County of Ericeira.
It is in that charter as are the first references to the fishermens cottage and is well aware of the care of the legislature to ensure the rights and duties of which were subject to the guardianship of grantees :"(...) The fishermen, give Twenty of the fish that killed at sea. Of the twelve fish to take a canal before giving a twentieth part, and Conger kill and eat him. Do they find dead fish do not pay court. Whale, give a twentieth of . porpoises and dolphins without impediment, in times of famine (...)".
In the thirteenth century, the whale, dolphin and porpoise species were the most fished and led, as in the sixteenth century, the streak, the road worth and hake. In 1547, D. John III gives fishermen ericeirences permission to sell the fish "eye" and not "the weight", a custom which is still 30 years remained.
New licenses granted by King Bar Alfonso IV, in 1369, and D. Manuel I in 1513, came to town ennoble counties, donated by the same D. Manuel to Prince Louis and by him to his natural son D. António, Prior of Crato, strongly opposed the taking of real power by Philip II of Spain. In 1589, in Fort Milreu, D. Anthony made a frustrated attempt of landing troops in order to gain power.
In 1855, following an administrative reorganization of the territory, Ericeira is no longer the county to be dependent Mafra, head council until the present day.
Ericeira known in the nineteenth century, its heyday, enormous increase, since it was the most crowded port of Extremadura, with customs, where it was supplying almost all the province. The former commercial importance has today for the remarkable tourist traffic, resulting from the situation and the privileged climate it enjoys. The departure for the exile of the Portuguese royal family in an episode that marks the end of the national monarchy, ever make the port of Ericeira one of the most dramatic geography of the municipality of Mafra.
Ericeira is very popular surf spot with some beachs very good for the practise of the sport and have the best waves in Portugal.
