LOCAL ACTIVITIES
Bere Island lies about 1.5km offshore from Castletownbere, the deep yet sheltered stretch of water between the island and the mainland forming the spacious natural harbour of Berehaven. It is approximately 7 x 3 miles in size and has a population of 210. Bere Island has so much to offer it has to be seen to be believed. A must for a day trip visitor to see is the Martello Tower situated on Ardagh Hill, The Old Lighthouse, The Batteries and for those of you who might enjoy a stroll there’s the Beara Way Walk and a new cycling route which is guaranteed to take your breath away with the panoramic views of the island, Bantry Bay and the Slieve Miskish Mountains.

Scattered around the island are the numerous remains, including two six inch guns, of the vast, late Victorian military fortifications which Britain built to protect its naval base at Berehaven which they held until 1938.

Now at the heart of the cruising ground of south west Ireland, is a new boat haven. The Marina is a fully serviced boating base that will satisfy every cruising requirement. There are fabulous restaurants to dine in, and impromptu sessions can be had in either of the two pubs.

Beara Peninsula
Is one of the few remaining unspoilt and natural places left in Ireland. The Peninsula is not overly commercialized with many very beautiful, natural sites to visit. Wild and rugged with spectacular views of Bantry Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The native population are renowned for their warm and traditional welcome and love of visitors. Seafood is naturally a speciality with all restaurants. Castletownbere (only 20 min offshore) is one of the largest fishing ports in Ireland. Second only to Killybegs in Donegal and it is an excellent base for golf, angling and boat hire.
