Cape Town villa to rent details
About Marina Cordith
Marina Cordith is our family home on the Marina Da Gama. We bought this lovely property at the water's edge as the setting creates the feeling of being on holiday every day of the year. Work commitments have resulted in us having to relocate for a few years and it is therefore our pleasure to share our lovely home with visitors from all over the world. The large, open structure of the villa creates a feeling of light and space and you will find that all the rooms are generously proportioned and tastefully and comfortably furnished on an African theme. Every room has a view of the marina with 3 of the rooms enjoying magnificent mountain views. Sunsets on the marina are glorious so be sure to bring your camera.
The living areas comfortably seat 6 and the kitchen is well equipped for a self-catering holiday. The TV lounge and main bedroom open up onto the patio which leads onto the lovely lawn which slopes down to the water of the marina. We have our own private jetty with mooring for our 2 seater canoe which is at your disposal. We will give you a plan of the canal system so that you can paddle around to your heart's content.
You will find that our property gives you the ideal base from which to explore the Cape Peninsula and Boland Wine Route. All the major tourist attractions are within easy reach but after a busy day of holiday activities you will enjoy coming home to the tranquility of the marina. In fact, there is so much to see and do on the Marina, that you could have a wonderful holiday without ever going out. We do recommend renting a car if you would like to go out and see all the area has to offer as public transport is not adequate
Marina Da Gama is a community of homes built on the eastern shores of the Zandvlei wetland lake system on the False Bay coast near Muizenberg, about 30km south of the City of Cape Town. The water in the waterways is central to the whole concept of the Marina and is part of two interdependent (and to some extent conflicting) systems - the saline ecosystem of the Zandvlei Estuary, and the freshwater system of the wetlands. This unique habitat is exactly what makes it a bird watching paradise with just under 100 species regularly sighted and recorded.
Park Island is a manmade island which has been developed as a bird sanctuary and planted with indigenous vegetation with many species especially chosen to attract bird life. Various walking trails have been made which are also suitable for cycling. There is a bird hide at the north side of the island to further enhance your bird watching experience. Along the False Bay Coast
Below we have listed some of the places along the coastal route from our village, Muizenberg, pronounced 'mew-zin-burg' to Cape Point. There are many more villages on the other side of the peninsula to discover if you have the time available. One of the local tourist centres will be able to give you directions and information.
Muizenberg's gently shelving, sandy beach is the most popular along the Peninsula for swimming; it's safe for bathing, the water tends to be flat and warm, and there's good surfing in its breakers. This is also the most developed of the Peninsula's beaches, with a pavilion complex around the car park featuring tea shops, a waterslide and minigolf. Along the beachfront and Main Road you'll also find downbeat shops, cafes and restaurants catering to the seaside trade. The mountains above Muizenberg offer hikers a myriad of trails and those who do not mind confined spaces can explore a labyrinth of caves.
Kalk Bay is the next delightful fishing village on the False Bay coast with a protected little harbour full of brightly painted wooden boats. Go at around 1pm to watch the fishermen offload their catch and you can buy your supper straight from the boat. The narrow main street is a tourist Mecca and is renowned for antique and art shops which make fascinating browsing and the well known Brass Bell restaurant and bar is as close as you can get to the breakers without going for a swim. The Cuban Cafe also has lovely views over the sea with unusual decor.
Fish Hoek is a placid town which lies further along the False Bay coast road towards Simon’s Town The long sandy beach is one of the safest in the Cape for bathing and body boarding and when the wind picks up, hobie-cats and windsurfers take to the waves. From July to October whales come into Fish Hoek bay and loll around just 50 metres from the shore in preparation for mating and giving birth. Huge schools of dolphins are also sometimes seen.
Simons Town is a quintessentially English seaside town with intricate Victorian wrought iron balustrades and the flag flying British Hotel dominating the main street. Enticing alleyways lead up to whitewashed houses on the hillside which overlook a charming waterfront complex and the False Bay Yacht Club alongside extensive Navy buildings. Further along the road towards Cape Point you are very likely to come across the resident troop of baboons who rule the road and jump onto car bonnets to peer nonchalantly in.
Cape Point is one of the greatest landmarks in the world: a wild and scenically spectacular area at the tip of the Cape Peninsula and African continent. It was here that Bartholomew Dias, the Portuguese navigator, first rounded the Cape in 1488, searching for a trade route to India and the East, and the large stone cross seen in the reserve commemorates his achievement. Cape Point is situated in the Cape Peninsula National Park, where brown and white bontebok antelope, dawdling tortoises and dashing ostriches can be seen on a drive through the pristine nature reserve. The flora too deserves your attention with 2,200 species of plants, including giant-headed protea bushes that flower in winter and gorgeous ericas you won't see anywhere else on Earth.
Where to go and what to do.
Below we have listed some of the most popular destinations within easy traveling distance from our Villa. These are just a small selection to whet your appetite and don't even begin to represent what is on offer. Do visit one of the local tourism offices for more information.
Century City is one of Cape Town's newer attractions on the outskirts of the city. It is home to both the thrilling Ratanga Junction theme park and the Canal Walk shopping centre. Ratanga Junction features over 30 attractions, the most exciting being the Cobra roller coaster. There are plenty of tame rides for children and less adventurous adults. The park also has numerous restaurants and bars and a variety of evening entertainment in the grand hall, theatre rooms and cinemas. Canal Walk is the largest regional shopping centre in Africa, with a huge range of shops, restaurants, cinemas and a bird conservation area, Intaka Island. Kids of all ages should not miss the MTN ScienCentre in the shopping centre - a fascinating hands-on experience with the latest technology.
The hugely successful Victoria & Alfred Waterfront complex has been developed around older wharves of the scenic Cape Town harbour. It is one of the most popular places to dine and stroll, day and night, and has the charm of a working harbour with seagulls and fur seals waiting for scraps from fishing boats, and tugs tied next to luxury yachts. The smell of salty sea air mingles with that of lobster and garlic prawns on the magnificent seafood platters served at smart patio tables. It is an excellent example of the worldwide trend to revitalise big city ports and has a vibrant atmosphere visited by locals and tourists alike, but with prices a little higher than elsewhere. The harbour buildings date back to 1860, when Prince Alfred (Queen Victoria’s son) tipped the rock for construction of the breakwater. Original buildings have been renovated and new buildings have been built in the same Victorian style. Along with a dazzling choice of restaurants, there are two shopping centres and two craft markets offering something for every shopper, as well as multi-screen cinemas and bars. During the day, an assortment of helicopter flips and boat rides are on offer, including a high speed catamaran to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Don’t miss the Two Oceans Aquarium, offering 300 species of underwater creatures. Scuba divers will enjoy the opportunity to dive with sharks.
Kirstenbosch Gardens, the beautiful world-renowned botanical gardens, are situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Approximately 6 000 species of Southern Africa’s flora are represented, particularly that of the Cape floral kingdom, known as fynbos. There is always something to see whatever the time of year, and you will come across some unusual features as you stroll through the gardens. There is a cycad bush in a cage, the last of its kind left in the world.
Table Mountain is Cape Town's most famous landmark and one of the city's greatest attractions. There are over 100 scenic ways to climb the mountain, which stands at 1086 metres above sea level, but most people take the revolving cable car which whisks you to the top in a just a few minutes. The views in all directions are magnificent and the feeling of being on top of the world is what makes this such a popular destination. It’s best to visit on a clear day.
Robben island is situated a mere 11km from Cape Town, in the middle of Table Bay, within clear sight of the city. It was on this island that Nelson Mandela was held prisoner for 18 years, much of it under hard labour. Prior to being a prison for political activists during the Apartheid era, the island was a leper colony. The island is now a museum and conservation area and was declared a World Heritage site in 1999. Former inmates lead tours around their old cells - a moving experience for both them and thousands of visitors from around the world. There is plenty of wildlife here too, with antelopes such as springbok and bontebok, grazing the open land, plus a diverse selection of birds, including ostriches and a Jackass (African) penguin colony. Cape fur seals play in the cold Atlantic waters and are food for great white sharks; who along with the cold water and strong currents deterred prisoners from attempting to swim to the mainland. Trips to Robben Island commence from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, on a super fast catamaran. The tour includes a visit to Nelson Mandela's prison cell and the limestone quarry where prisoners work unceasingly day after day. There is the chance to view the wildlife and take photographs of Cape Town across the bay, with Table Mountain as the backdrop.
The Cape Winelands is a scenically enchanting region of dramatic mountains and fertile valleys, planted with vines stretching across rolling fields. Here farmers enjoy perfect conditions and produce of the best wines in the world. The soil is so rich, they use about a tenth the amount of fertiliser that European farmers do. It is a wonderful combination of small historic towns, beautiful scenery and wine estates producing delicious wines and brandies. There are literally hundreds of wine estates, all offering the chance to sample their unique blends in a picture-perfect setting. Stellenbosch is the capital of the Winelands and was the second town to be established by the Dutch settlers. It is very attractive and full of old thatched and whitewashed Cape Dutch buildings and historic national monuments. The wine estates too, are most impressive with grand manor houses and beautifully laid out grounds. Allow yourself enough time to fully explore this area and let a guide take you around to fill you in on its fascinating history and show you the best spots.
Spier must be the most unique and child friendly estate in the Winelands. A beautiful estate, comprising a complex of old Cape Dutch buildings, housing wine cellars, restaurants, galleries, beautiful gardens, picnics at the Deli play area, and a large, enclosed Play Garden across the river built just for children.. There is also an amphitheatre from where you can enjoy music and concerts. The children can enjoy horse rides and a cheetah park and raptor centre. The Spier Vintage Train is a novel way to get there, in true romantic style of the steam train era, and runs from Cape Town central to Spier.
