All about our cottage
Why not stay in our Irish labourer’s cottage in County Cork? Where: a small village called Gortroe, near Youghal (about 30 minutes drive East of Cork City) What has it got? A lovely lounge/kitchen with pine floor and pine vaulted ceiling, a solid fuel burning cast-iron stove (starter pack of fuel provided), hand-made Irish Dresser and kitchen cupboards. Cooking facilities (electric stove with oven, microwave etc.), refrigerator and dishwasher. A main bedroom with double bed. A second bedroom with adult size bunk beds (can be reduced to one bed if required), chest of drawers and an open fire. Shower/toilet room accessed via 3rd spare room/bedroom which contains hand-made large wardrobe. An acre of land at the back with a small orchard. Oil central heating. There is a sitting area at the side of the cottage with an outdoor table and space for a tent. Outhouses contain a washing machine and tumble dryer. Within a short walk are a village shop, wine bar/restaurant and a hotel with swimming pool.

What’s our secret? Well, Tony Fitzgerald is our caretaker and he and his son Andrew will call in, make you welcome, point you in the right directions and sort out any little problems.
It is called Arnott’s cottage because it was occupied by Mr and Mrs Arnott for many many years, in fact they lived there when my parents’ family, including me, went back to the village to see grandparents back in the 1960s.

Where to go and what to do
There's lot's to do: or do nothing if you want! Loads of restaurants within a short drive (it is possible to manage without a car but it's not easy). In Youghal (10 minutes drive away) is the famous Aherne's fish restaurant: we recommend the bar food especially the fish chowder, the brown bread and the Guinness. In Midleton, about 20 minutes away towards Cork, is another great restaurant called the Farmgate. In Cork City itself of course there are lots of excellent places. Not forgetting Ballymaloe House where the Allen family provide wonderful modern food made from local ingredients and there is a lovely garden which Darina Allen has developed over recent years. A real treat!
