Dubrovnik Riviera holiday house details
Orebic a holiday in paradise.
I don’t want to say too much about our holiday time at the villa because I want you to have the pleasure of discovering it all for yourselves as we did but suffice it to say I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
The details of how to get there and how to find the house are included in the Information Sheet. The house itself sits on the slopes of the majestic Mount Ilya and looks out across the water to the island of Korcula. Great views from the upper balconies; lots of nice shade on the ground floor terrace; by the time you arrive there may even be grapes on the vines!
The person who will show you around the house on your arrival is called Katija and she is a lovely lady with two gorgeous little girls. Her husband is a first officer in the Merchant Navy and is therefore away a lot. She will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
There were six of us in the house, two couples and two single women, and there was ample room for everyone. With three bathrooms to choose from you’re never locked out of the loo! Mealtimes were wonderful affairs with everyone sat around the large dining room table or eating al fresco on the terrace (especially breakfast). The terrace is also a nice place to sit in the evening with a glass of wine in hand after a meal out or a stroll up the lane. Further up Ruskovic, past the rest of the houses, the road veers around to the left and you see what appears to be the ruins of a house. If you go down the steps you will find water coming out of the ground – this is fresh spring water from the top of the mountain and tastes wonderful. Feel free to take empty bottles and fill them up!
Some tips on where to eat are in a notebook in the house – maybe you will add some more of your own. The food is generally very nice and the portions are extra large (sometimes too large). The walk back to the house from Orebić is a very pleasant way of walking off a big meal on a balmy evening.
One day we took the car ferry across to Korcula – what a beautiful island! Korcula town is very picturesque with a marina, shops and restaurants as well as the walk around the castle walls. We never did find out the times of the historic sword dance though! The views back across to Orebić are just as wonderful as the other way round. Drive on to Limbada and you will find a lovely sandy beach with a little bar selling cold drinks and ice creams.
If you like walking the hike up to the monastery takes about 45 minutes but the views are well worth the walk. You can of course drive up (the road turns right just opposite the tennis centre).
You cannot visit Croatia without spending some time in Dubrovnik and nothing I can say about that place will be worthy of it. Just go and see for yourself.
All in all we think Orebić and Croatia itself are a wonderful place for a holiday. There is everything you need without the things you don’t need (hassle, noise and crowds)!
Food etc
Some say the charm of this country has increased since the war of the early 1990's, the Croats appreciation of the good things in life, their warmth and sense of unity, and feelings of pride in their country all combine to make it a hugely welcoming place in which to live and travel.
Nothing can take away from it's 1778Km of beautiful coastline, which is scattered with over 1,000 islands basking in the clear waters of the Adriatic, nor the diverse and dramatic landscapes of the interior.
Croatias complex and intriguing history has left a wonderful array of towns and villages all over the country, some vibrant and lively others rustic and quaint, A trip around the country is a veritable history lesson in Baroque, Venetian, Roman, Medeival, and 19th century central European eras.
Among the beauty that inland Croatia offers up, are the agriculturally rich plains of Slavonia, a diverse selection of mountain ranges and the countrys most visited spot, the forest lined Plitvice lakes which are formed by a series of sparkling pools linked by little waterfalls.
Croatia even caters for all weather preferences with the sheltered coast enjoying hot dry summers, and mild rainy winters, and inland areas seeing a more continental climate with hot and cold snaps.
And the cuisine is equally varied, mainland foods are characterised by the earlier proto-slovac, Hungarian, Viennese and Turkish tastes, while coastal delicacies bear the influences of the Greek, Roman and lllyrian, and later Mediterranean cuisine from Italy and France.
Tuck into a burek (layered pie made with meat or cheese) or piroska a cheese donut from the Zagreb region, or take advantage of the Adriatics vast array of fresh seafood such as Scampi, Prstaci (shellfish), and Dalmatian brodet, (mixed fish stewed with rice), and other specialities such as manistra od bobica (beans and fresh maize soup). and why not wash it all down with one of Croatias 100's of local wines, fruit juices and beers, as an inexpensive and authentic country that is justifiably popular yet not overrun with tourists and developers, Croatia is tipped as the place of the moment.

Dubrovnik Riviera holiday house reviews
Katherine says: "Lovely house, spacious, well furnished, comfortable and nicely situated at the foot of Mt Saint Elijah.
The house has lots of balconies all of which give good shade at different times of the day and nice views either of the sea over the rooftops and trees or of the surrounding countryside. The back of the house has fabulous views of the towering mountain behind.
The town is small with low key tourism only so it retains an unspoilt and fairly quiet if a little ordinary mood. It suited us fine as we were not looking for busy night life, just somewhere in the evening to dine out and stroll. It has all you need for basic shopping and plenty of restaurants.
Whilst the quality of food varied a lot, italian always seemed a good bet and usually fish. Fish is sold by weight and was not such a cheap option. For us it averaged out at about £10.00 to £15.00a head but was worth it as it was fresh and a speciality of course of the area. It is often accompanied with a local vegetable which bore the curious name of Mangold, and seemed a sort of cross between spinach and cabbage.
As for trips out and about we particularly enjoyed the island of Korcula....just a 20mt ferry ride across the channel and about £3.00 return each as foot passengers. At night this picturesque and charming old walled town has a lovely lively atmosphere and is great for dining and wandering. The traditional sword dance complete with local Dalmation singing and performed in the old town below the tower is worth booking for.
There are plenty of pebble beaches in the area and the sea is pleasant for swimming. For a fiver you can buy a pair of windsurfing type shoes in the local shops which make getting in and out of the water, over the sharp pebbles, easy peasy particularly if you, like me, do not want to subject the soles of your feet to what feels like a form of chinese torture. They are easy to swim in and as a bonus they protect your feet from the little black spiny sea urchins which nestle into the rocks. Believe you me you do not want to get those spines in your feet. So buy the shoes then you can really get full benefit from the lovely Adriatic sea.
Once in, the sea is beautufully clear and in places the seaweed covering is so dense that the water looks almost black as you swim in it.
There are some lovely boat trips to other islands. We particularly enjoyed the fish picnic with Elite travel where you visit other islands with a guide and commentary ( french and english as well as croatian )and beaches and are served a picnic of grilled fish and salad with Dalmation singing thrown in from the guide ( who has a great tenor voice)and captain with as much local wine as you can absorb...it was equally evident as the afternoon progressed that the captain and guide had also been absorbing much of the wine though by this time the captains son had thankfully taken over the sailing. The whole is a thoroughly delightful day run by a charming family.
You can also hire small boats with a shade canopy quite cheaply ..we picked ours up on the road to Perna...so you can explore nearby islands yourselves. If you do this watch out for the afternoon mistral which blows up late afternoon most days in the channel. For us the return trip was the best wet water ride we have ever had!
We also hired canoes at Perna which were very good value and a wind surfer, likewise very reasonable but take some gloves to protect your hands from the cross bar on the latter, worn by use.
The Croatian wind surfing championships were taking place whilst we were there and that presented a dazzling spectacle on the water as sails, surfers and kites dashed and skidded about the channel.
Dubrovnik was truly beautiful so try to fit that in....you'll be glad you did, particularly if you can be there in the evening....the streets are polished by so many generations of feet that they shine as if they are wet, and everywhere is the sound of musicians perfuming the night air.
Whilst the hotels are very pricey the tourist information will fix you up with rooms which are far more reasonable.
If you enjoy things horticultural then there is a garden dating back to the 1400's well worth visiting just north of Dubrovnik at Tristeno. There is an arboretum with some excellent species and the central part has italianate features, walkways with pergolas and a stunning view point over the coast from a loggia. A natural spring is channeled through the garden over an aqueduct and into a fountain and pool with classical style figures including a spouting neptune and unicorn. Below the garden is a small harbour which provides the perfect spot for a cooling swim.
I can wholly recommend the house and the area and if you go. i hope you have as much fun as we did!!
